This puzzling condition is known as Conversion Disorder, or more formally, Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNSD). What Is Conversion Disorder? Conversion disorder is a mental health condition in which a person develops neurological-like symptoms that can’t be explained by medical tests or a physical illness. The symptoms are very real to the individual, even though they arise from psychological distress rather than a physical disease. It’s as if the mind, overwhelmed by stress or trauma, “converts” emotional pain into physical symptoms.
